I am so happy that I finally got to watch the sequel to one of my favourite animated movies of all time, Finding Dory. I knew I would be overwhelmed with emotions, after all, Finding Nemo made me cry and seeing Marlin reconnect with his son, remains as one of the most powerful scenes in animated storytelling.
Dory, the lovable and cheerful character, who suffers from short term memory loss has been trying to teach us a lesson from the first film. I was too worried about Nemo to get it back then, but now that I have learnt more about Dory and my adult self, I finally understand.
As we go through life and encounter a myriad of experiences, good and bad, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the bad things that have happened. How many times have you asked yourself, “Why me?” I know I ask myself that a couple times each month. Sometimes I feel like once I leave my apartment, I’m kissing my possibility of having a good day, good-bye.
But Dory doesn’t think like that. She has been singing this song from the moment we met her: “When life gets you down, you know what you gotta do? Just keep swimming, Just keep swimming, Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming.”
And that’s exactly what we should do! Swimming, of course, can be easily replaced with “going,” but I’m going to replace it with the word “remembering.” Just keep remembering the good and positive things that have happened in your life, no matter how minuscule they may seem in comparison to the difficult moments.
This won’t erase the bad memories or the bad people, but it would erase the amount of time you spend thinking about and being consumed by negative energy. Dory quickly forgets every sarcastic or hurtful words that are said to her, but she always remembers to find a positive solution to every problem that comes her way.
Trust me, this is easier said than done (especially if you don’t have short term memory loss), so you just have to keep remembering to do it.
